Councilmember Craig Ottavelli and field trip participantsOn April 22, 2008 (Earth Day) about 100 Olympians joined the City Council for a fun and informative twist to Olympia's semi-annual town hall meeting ... field trips on school buses no less!

Field trip participants experienced first hand:

  • the purity of Olympia's acquifer-feed drinking water;
  • how we're reclaiming used water for Councilmember Jeff Kingsbury and field trip participantsirrigation;
  • innovative practices to reduce landfill waste through commercial composting; and
  • techniques the LOTT Alliance is using to preserve and protect public health by cleaning and restoring used water.

Olympia is committed to being the MOST sustainable Capital City in the United States.  Read participant ideas (pdf file) of how we can make it happen.

City of Olympia Drinking Water:  The City of Olympia's Drinking Water Utility provides clean, safe, and reliable drinking water to Olympia residents and businesses. Olympia's water meets all state and federal requirements. Every year we conduct more than 12,000 water quality tests at our water sources and throughout the water system.  The City of Olympia also distributes reclaimed water produced by the LOTT Alliance.

LOTT Alliance Budd Inlet Wastewater Treatment Plant and the Martin Way Reclaimed Water Facility:  The LOTT Alliance provides wastewater treatment and reclaimed water production services for the urban areas of Lacey, Olympia, and Tumwater in north Thurston County. LOTT's mission is to preserve and protect public health and the environment by cleaning and restoring water resources for our communities.

Silver Springs Organics Commercial Composting Facility:  Located in south Thurston County near Rainier, Washington, Silver Springs Organics Commercial Composting facility is a private entrepreneurship dedicated to:

  • Improving our environment through waste reduction and recycling by diverting organic wastes from landfills and transforming them into a renewable, high-grade compost product;
  • Creating good jobs and improving the local economy; and
  • Remaining a steward of the Silver Springs Ranch and preserving it for the enjoyment of future generations.
